Automation Strengthens CLT Workforce, Increasing Production Capacity

Coastal Life Technologies (CLT), a contract manufacturer and distributor of sterile, single-use medical devices headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, has added a fully automated system to cut, coil, and band medical grade tubing used in many of the products produced for its customers. The equipment was developed and implemented to provide expanded manufacturing capabilities for the increasing demand of CLT tubing products. The machine features customizable tooling to create specific shapes for different diameter tubing and to apply banding paper in a variety of shapes and sizes, with interchangeable storage bins for managing product handling.

CLT Manufacturing Manager Katie Nance and Engineering Manager Monica Nikolaou were integral in the design of the automated equipment. “With the purchase of the machine, we have eliminated manual, repetitive operations, allowing a modular and scalable production system that will improve assembler health, comfort, and stamina,” said Katie Nance. She added, “Meeting the demand of our customers would not have been possible without the addition of the system. It operates 21 hours per day, 5-6 days per week, facilitating our customers’ growth and allowing CLT to expand.”

CLT provides streamlined solutions for manufacturers of medical devices, including design and engineering, raw material management, final assembly and sterile packaging, management of the sterilization process and warehousing and distribution of product.

Final Assembly & Sterile Packaging

CLT can perform a variety of assembly processes and packaging operations in our 8,000 square foot ISO Class 8 clean room. Our primary expertise is in assembling and packaging sterile, single-use, disposable surgical devices.

We engineer processes and streamline manufacturing to allow for greater efficiencies, lowering cost to our customers. Our team reviews the specific assembly requirements and selects the best systems for the product. Lean Manufacturing tenets such as pull systems, back flushing, and Kanbans are utilized to maintain and maximize production control and efficiency.

Product quality should not depend on inspection after production; it should be inherent to the design and manufacturing processes. Quality is always a part of our process engineering. A quality assurance plan suited to your product requirements will be established, including the quality benchmarks used in our continuous improvement efforts.

Process validation is integral to the final packaging of all sterile devices that we manufacture. We can package in pouches or trays depending on what is best suited for your product. CLT continues to monitor the packaging process as part of our ongoing quality plans to ensure package integrity.
